School Climate Update During PTSA Community Meeting

On Monday, Feb. 26, 2024 during a Community meeting hosted by the PTSA, we heard an update from school climate specialist, Dr. Jim Walters, Principal John Houston, and Social Worker, Mackenzie Fee. They discussed using restorative justice practices to enhance the school environment at Whitman Middle School. This initiative has resulted into the development of a wellness plan and toolkit for both staff and students. The aim is to provide everyone with the necessary resources to promote emotional well-being and ensure a safe and healthy learning environment for all. There will be more to come on the student health plan and you can review a video (posted soon) of the meeting and the presentation focused on Whitman Middle School’s inclusion in the SAMHSA/DOE School Climate Transformation Grant. for those who are unable to attend in person.

Back Ground

Principal John Houston, Assistant Principal Leanne Dunlap, and School Climate Specialist Dr. Jim Walters have been developing at Whitman to bring multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) to our students and staff. We also hoped to have answers to the following questions: What does this mean? How is this disrupting the antiquated way of doing things? What is the goal of regulation versus discipline? How do we measure the success of this work?
