    Whitman Music Program

    The Whitman Music Program is a comprehensive, award-winning program that is designed to prepare students to succeed in high school level ensembles. The program has two jazz bands, three concert bands, two string orchestras, and an after school drumline. Roughly one-third of Whitman’s population is an a musical ensemble. Whitman's top ensembles consistently receive "Superior" ratings and "Best Overall" distinctions at regional festivals and competitions.

    Whitman Music Instructors

    Joel Orsen plays drum in a marching band Mr. Joel Orsen is in his 12th year of teaching at Whitman Middle School. This year he teaches jazz band, 6th grade band, junior band, senior band, and senior orchestra. Joel received his degree in music education from the University of Washington. When not teaching, he enjoys playing with local bands, including the Seattle Sounders Sound Wave Marching Band and the University of Washington Alumni Band.

    Mrs. Ellie Kok is teaching choir and the 6th grade orchestra this year. Ellie received a degree in music from Whitworth University, and a master's degree in teaching from Seattle Pacific University. In addition to teaching at Whitman and Eckstein, Ellie conducts two community choirs. In her free time, she likes to make crafts, bake, and hang out with her husband, dog, and cat.
