    Attendance Matters in Middle School!

    To Report Your Student Late or Absent


    Your child misses out when he or she is not in school. If you know in advance that your child will be absent, please contact the school. If you are unable to do so, please send a written excuse explaining the absence when your child returns to school.

    Whitman Attendance Procedures

    Absence means any time a student is not at school or participating in a school sponsored activity in lieu of attending school, for example, on a field trip. For further details please click here to read the full Truancy Brochure.

    Excused absences include but not limited to:
        *   Student injury or illness
        *   Medical appointments
        *   Family emergency (such as death in the family, parent hospitalization, etc.)

    Unexcused Absences include:
        *   Oversleeping, 
        *   Student missing the bus
        *   Transportation problems 
        *   Student for to babysitting
        *   Family Vacations are not excused
        *   Student on waitlist for another school

    Early Release of your Student

    Please call ahead 206-252-1204, email, or, send a signed note and have the student deliver it to the Attendance Office (Room 101) before first period. The student is to be sign-out and picked up from Attendance Office. The student can only be released to people designated on the SPS "Student Contact" list. Please make sure to update your Student's Contact list whenever there are changes. Note: If you do not call ahead or send a note or an email, please be patient while we locate your student, it takes time.

    Long-Term Absences

    For long-term absences (more than 3 days) please contact the attendance office at 252-1204. Vacations are NOT excused absences.

    Green Cards

    To ride a yellow bus home with a friend, parent/guardian must provide a written, signed note with friend's name/bus number and deliver to Attendance Office BEFORE first period. Green Cards will be prepared and students can pick up at lunch. Phone calls/emails will not be accepted as permission. Note: No Green Cards will be issued after school.
